When we were happy
I was talking the other day with one of my old-time friends.
We came together to Spain for work.
He was recalling the time he started at the company he is still working for after 22 years!! Wow. Congratulations!!
He was telling his students that when we started back in 1998, we were still handling stuff pretty manually.
The fax was still a thing to send copies of documents and proof of payment. We were collecting payments over the phone with credit card data flying around.
We would send documentation to clients via paper mail. Everything was still paper.
We were a small team, we were all in our 20s, and we were happy. We were very good at what we did, and we had fun while doing it. So rare these days.
Every time I hear people talking about work, they just complain and complain. I cherish the moments we laughed so hard only by looking at each other's faces.
We were in the middle of the transition to electronic. The online business model was bubbling, and our role as salespeople started to become less relevant by the day. We all embraced the new ways. It was so easy to get things, buy things from Amazon, sell stuff through eBay. Book trips online. Get support through online chats. Our interactions were becoming less humanized, less personal. I have to admit that there are significant advantages to buy stuff online, it gets to you on the next day now. Back then, it would still take a few days, but it was even quicker than regular commerce and cheaper. It seems that our dehumanization is bearing its fruits it least I thought so. We now have pandemics crossing borders like never before, and we refuse to stay in hour homes, we refuse to isolate ourselves to prevent being infected or infect others. On the one hand, we enjoy the commodities of being at home binge-watching our favorite shows, but we still need the freedom of choosing to stay home or get out of the house when we want to. Technology has allowed us to be whoever we want to be and achieved whatever we want to make. It provides us the privilege of being informed at every second, and still, we behave erratically and with no logic. Recurring to our basic instincts when we feel that our commodities and way of life will be impacted or changed. Being Human as never been so challenging, and it's interesting to find out where this will lead us as a species.
